Hina (grandmother of Maui)

Role: Maui's grandmother · First appears: Chapter X · Oahu Legends of Maui · Part 1

In Chapter X · Oahu Legends of Maui · Part 1, Hina (grandmother of Maui) and Maui arrived from foreign lands and dwelt in Kane-ana, at Waianae, Oahu. Maui taught her to make fire with fire sticks and coconut fibre, then suggested drawing the islands together into one land.

In Chapter X · Oahu Legends of Maui · Part 2, Hina sent Maui inland to find an old man who could advise him. Later, when Maui called, “O Hina, keep it dark,” she darkened the dawn so Pea-pea-maka-walu would fall asleep, allowing Maui to kill him.
