Anna Karenina

Turovtsin

Family: aristocracy · Role: guest · First appears: PART FOUR · Chapter 10

In chapter 111, Turovtsin laughed loudly and jovially at Sergey Ivanovitch’s little pills, glad to find something amusing in the conversation. By chapter 112, he and Kitty were described as great friends, while he had stayed with Darya Alexandrovna’s children for three weeks during their scarlet fever, helping care for them “like a nurse.” Levin admired the way he laughed and was associated with Turovtsin through memories of his courtship; Turovtsin was also recorded as a suitor to him.

By chapter 173, Turovtsin was Stepan Arkadyevitch’s friend and was in love with Darya Alexandrovna, having helped her nurse the children. In chapter 196, Levin still liked him and found his good-natured face welcome after an intellectual conversation; Turovtsin also introduced him to Gagin.
