Gods and Fighting Men

Derg

Family: Tuatha de Danaan · Role: foster-brother of Caoilte · First appears: The Fianna · Huntings and Enchantments · Ilbrec of Ess Ruadh · Part 1

At Ess Ruadh, Derg identified himself to Caoilte as “Derg, son of Eoghan of the people of Usnach,” and said he was Caoilte’s foster-brother. When the people of the hill asked him to take command of the battle, he answered, “I will take it,” accepting its losses and gains.

In the battle, Derg killed Dubh (son of Eirrge) and Donn (son of Eirrge) with a single spear cast. Later, parting from his comrade Caoilte was harder for him than the day he had parted from Finn and all the Fianna.
