In Adventure XXII, Werbel served Etzel as a minstrel and gained richly at the wedding feast where Kriemhild sat beside the king. In Adventure XXIII, Etzel sent him and Swemmel as envoys to invite Gunther and his men to the feast; Kriemhild secretly summoned the envoys and instructed them to bring her kin, including Hagen, and convey her messages.

In Adventure XXIV, Werbel and Swemmel delivered the invitation at Worms. On the journey they received gifts from Rudeger and Gotelind, and at Worms they were given gifts by Gunther, Giselher, Gernot, Gere, Ortwin, and Uta. Hagen repeatedly withheld permission for the envoys to leave until the Burgundians were ready; at last they accepted Gunther’s gifts and carried them back to Etzel’s land. In Adventure XXXIII, Hagen struck off Werbel’s right hand while he sat at Etzel’s board.
