The Boy's Froissart

Lord de Coucy

Also known as: the Lord de Coucy · Family: France · Role: baron · First appears: Book 2, Chapter 1

In Book 2, Chapter 16, Lord de Coucy was ordered with Lords d’Albreth and Sir Hugh de Hanlon to form and array the battalions for the march toward Commines.

In 1390, he sailed on the African expedition as second to Duke of Bourbon (Africa expedition). During the campaign, he was widely loved by the gentlemen for his kindness and gracious manner toward knights and squires, especially those from abroad. When a challenge was accepted, he objected and advised against the combat, but armed himself and went with the Christians to meet the Saracens. The lords decided not to break off the challenge, and the army later attacked the town, suffering losses; the account notes that following de Coucy’s advice would have avoided them. For the season, the leaders resolved to end the siege and return home.
