Anna Karenina

Marya Nikolaevna

Also known as: Marya / Masha · Family: unknown · Role: life partner · First appears: PART ONE · Chapter 24

In chapter 24, Nikolay Levin publicly declared Marya Nikolaevna his life partner and said he regarded her as equivalent to his wife. That night, Masha helped Levin get the hopelessly drunk Nikolay Levin to bed, and promised to write to Levin if Nikolay Levin needed help or should be persuaded to stay with his brother. In February, she wrote to Levin that Nikolay Levin’s health was worsening, though he would not take advice.

By chapter 100, Nikolay said he had cast Marya off and described her as a source of worries. At Moscow in chapter 140, Marya had reconciled with Nikolay Dmitrievitch and moved with him to a provincial town, where he had received a government post. In chapter 141, while caring for the sick Nikolay Levin, she was told to clear the room and then leave.
