Juan Perez de Viedma

Also known as: Licentiate Juan Perez de Viedma / the Judge · Family: the Judge's household · Role: Judge of appeal · First appears: Part 1, Ch. 42.1

At the inn in Part 1, Ch. 42.1, Juan Perez de Viedma recognizes the captive as his long-lost brother after the curate arranges an indirect revelation. He also learns that Doña Clara de Viedma is his daughter, whose mother died giving birth to her. In Ch. 42.2, the curate identifies the captive as Captain Viedma and Zoraida as his sister-in-law; Juan recognizes and embraces his brother, promising that his wealth and his brother’s would rescue him from captivity. He accepts Zoraida and places all his possessions at her disposal, then agrees with them to return to Seville and notify their father so he can attend her marriage and baptism.

At the inn in Ch. 44.2, Juan recognizes Don Luis, who has come in a manner and dress he considers unsuitable to his condition. The next day, Don Luis proposes marriage to Doña Clara de Viedma and asks Juan to accept him as a son; Juan postpones his decision and tells him to remain for the present. In Ch. 45.2, Don Quixote calls on Juan, as Judge, and the curate to represent opposing kings and make peace, while in Ch. 46.1 Juan readily offers to pay the innkeeper’s score.
