In ch.7, Mrs. Philips is married to Mr. Philips, who had been a clerk to the Bennets’ father and succeeded him in the business. Living near Longbourn, she was visited by Catherine Bennet and Lydia Bennet, who came to pay their duty to their aunt “The village of Longbourn was only one mile from Meryton; a most convenient distance for the young ladies, who were usually tempted thither three or four times a week, to pay their duty to their aunt”. In ch.15, Mr. Collins admired her manners and politeness, while Mr. Philips was promised an invitation to George Wickham to dine with the Philipses the next day.

By ch.40, Mrs. Philips is speaking with her sister Mrs. Bennet, and in ch.47 she comes to Longbourn after Mr. Bennet has gone away, staying with Elizabeth Bennet until Thursday. In ch.48, she visits Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Bennet frequently, saying that her purpose is “cheering and heartening them up”.
