The Twelve Caesars

Antonia

Also known as: the younger Antonia · Family: Julio-Claudian · Role: mother of Germanicus · First appears: Caligula 1

Antonia, the younger Antonia, was married to Drusus the Elder and had three surviving children: Germanicus, Livilla, and Claudius Caesar. Germanicus was the father of Caligula, and Caenis was Antonia’s freedwoman and amanuensis.

After living with Livia Augusta, Caligula was transferred to the family of his grandmother, Antonia. The senate then granted Antonia all the honours previously conferred on the empress Livia Augusta. Caligula later subjected her to indignities and ill usage, which caused her death; some believed he also gave her poison.
