Epaminondas
Family: Thebes · Role: general · First appears: Pelopidas
Epaminondas of Thebes was a general who, at Leuctra, fought alongside Pelopidas and the Sacred Band against the Spartans. With his phalanx he charged alone while Pelopidas came up with great speed, and together they broke the Spartans’ courage, beginning “such a flight and slaughter amongst the Spartans, as was never before known.”
Epaminondas and Pelopidas remained constant friends and colleagues in government and command, later advancing together into Peloponnesus as supreme commanders. Meneclidas rivalled and opposed him, excluding him from the chief captaincy for a long time, while Aristides was his patron. Philopoemen made Epaminondas his great example, and Epaminondas was opposed by Agesilaus; in an encounter also involving Anticrates, the Laconian wounded him with a spear.
