Glewlwyd Gavaelvawr

Family: Arthur's Court · Role: porter · First appears: THE LADY OF THE FOUNTAIN 1

In Arthur’s court, Glewlwyd Gavaelvawr serves as porter. In The Lady of the Fountain, he welcomes guests and strangers, receives them with honour, and explains the court’s manners and customs: “Glewlwyd Gavaelvawr was there, acting as porter, to welcome guests and strangers, and to receive them with honour, and to inform them of the manners and customs of the Court;”

In Geraint the Son of Erbin, he is chief porter, with seven men serving under him—Grynn, Pen Pighon, Llaes Cymyn, Gogyfwlch, Gwrdnei, Drem, and Clust—who divide the year among them, while he performs the office only at one of the three high festivals. In Kilhwch and Olwen or the Twrch Trwyth, he is connected as employer with Arthur, and Kilhwch is involved in the exchange marked by “What clamour soever thou mayest make,” while Huandaw, Gogigwr, and Penpingon are later named as his attendants and are slain.
