Pausanias' Description of Greece

Epeus

Role: sculptor · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 23

Endymion put his sons to a running contest at Olympia for the kingdom, and Epeus won, after which his people were first called Epeans. His siblings were Pæon, Ætolus and Eurycyde; he married Anaxiroe, and their daughter was Hyrmina, with no male offspring.

Elsewhere, Panopeus is named as his father, and Epeus is credited with contriving the wooden horse, “a design to break down the walls.” He also made wooden statues of Aphrodite and Hermes. After his death, Pelops occupied Pisæa and Olympia, taking territory that bordered upon Pisæa from Epeus.
