Pausanias' Description of Greece

Endymion

Role: father · First appears: Book 5 · Chapter 1

Endymion was the son of Aethlius and the father of Pæon, Epeus, Ætolus and Eurycyde. The account gives several traditions about his marriage: to Asterodia, or, according to others, Chromia or Hyperippe. The Moon was said to have fallen in love with him and borne him 50 daughters.

In Book 5, Chapter 1, Endymion made his sons compete in running at Olympia for the kingdom; Epeus won, and his people were first called Epeans. In Chapter 8, Endymion deposed Clymenus and gave the kingdom to his sons as a prize for the best runner at Olympia. Amythaon was his uncle on his father’s side.
