Mátsailema

Also known as: the Beloved Follower / Úanam Yáluna · Role: the younger of the Twain (first called Úanam Yáluna) · First appears: Section 5 · The Birth from the Sea of the Twain Deliverers of Men

In Section 5, the Sun-father and the Foam-cap gave birth to the Twain: first Áhaiyuta, the elder, then Mátsailema, the younger, also called Úanam Yáluna, the Beloved Follower. The brothers were described as Twin brothers of Light, “like to question and answer in deciding and doing.”

In Section 13, Mátsailema and Áhaiyuta fired arrows at the firebolts, shaking the earth. In Section 44 · The Origin of the Twin Gods of War and of the Priesthood of the Bow · Part 1, the Twain took the names Áhaiyuta and Mátsailema, identifying themselves as the elder and younger gods of war. On a dark night thereafter, in Section 45, Mátsailema and his warriors followed behind Áhaiyuta and his warriors as they led the people to safety. In Section 47, the brothers again divided the people into companies to search for the Middle; Mátsailema then journeyed north with the Winter people and the Warriors of the Knife. In Section 48, the People of Winter, led by the ‘Hléeto-kwe and Mátsailema, fought their way into the valley of the Snow-water river and settled at its mud-issuing springs.
