Conan Meriadoc
Also known as: Conan · Family: Britons · Role: nephew of Octavius · First appears: Book V 8–9
In Book V 8–9, Conan was the nephew of Octavius, and some believed he should take the throne while Octavius’s daughter married a prince from another kingdom. His ambition to succeed displeased Caradoc and made them rivals, while it also placed him in rivalry with Maximian.
In Book V 10–12, Conan laid down his arms at Hamo’s Port and granted Maximian peace, though “much against his will.” Afterward, he withdrew to Albania, raised an army against Maximian, and endured repeated conflict with him before friends mediated a reconciliation. At Armorica, Maximian promised to advance Conan to the throne of the conquered kingdom, and Conan bowed submissively and promised lifelong loyalty. In Book V 13–16, Maximian settled Armorica with Britons and bestowed it on Conan, while Conan was “most passionately in love” with Ursula, whom he courted.
