Ragnar (husband of Swanhwid)
Also known as: Ragnar · Family: Swedes · Role: stepson of Thorhild · First appears: Book Two · Part 3
In Book Two · Part 3, Thorhild (wife of Hunding)’s hatred of her stepsons led her to make Ragnar (husband of Swanhwid) and Thorwald the king’s shepherds. Ragnar’s bond with Swanhwid began when she plighted her troth to him and gave him a sword; in Book Two · Part 4, she won the throne of Sweden for him and took him as her husband.
At Swanhwid’s request, Frode (son of Hadding) made peace with Ragnar and forgave his wrongdoing. Ragnar and Swanhwid later gave Frode a force to replace the one they had cost him. In Denmark, Ragnar captured Ubbe (husband of Ulfhild) but pardoned him, then took Ulfhild (daughter of Hadding) from Ubbe and made her marry his friend Scot. In Book Two · Part 7, Frode perished while attacking Ragnar, Sweden’s king; Ragnar died in Sweden in Book Two · Part 8. Their son Hothbrodd succeeded them.
