Holinshed's Chronicles

Henry II

Also known as: Henrie the second / K. Henrie / king Henrie the second · Family: England · Role: king of England · First appears: King John 1

Henry II, king of England of the English royal house, was the son of Geoffrey Plantagenet, Count of Anjou and Francis I, father of King John and Richard I, and husband of Eleanor of Aquitaine. His relations with King John also included King John’s seeking absolution and promising to defend the church and priesthood.

Around c. 1200 at Lincolne, Henry II brought Hugh of Lincoln into England, made him abbot of Whithing, and then appointed him bishop of Lincolne; Hugh of Lincoln is recorded as both his feudal dependent and his patronage beneficiary. By c. 1453, Aquitaine, associated with Henry II’s marriage to Eleanor of Aquitaine, was finally returned from English possession to French obedience.
