Plutarch's Lives

Aemilia

Family: Roman · Role: daughter of Aeneas and Lavinia · First appears: Romulus

Aemilia is Roman. In one account, she is the daughter of Aeneas and Lavinia, and Romulus was said to have been born to her by the god Mars: “that Aemilia, daughter of Aeneas and Lavinia, had him by the god Mars”.

Another Aemilia is named as the daughter of Lucius Paulus and wife of Scipio the Great. A further Aemilia was the daughter of Scaurus and Metella; she was married to Manius Glabrio until Sylla forced her to leave him, then gave her, though pregnant, to Pompey. With Metella joining Sylla in persuading him, Pompey divorced Antistia and married Aemilia to secure an alliance with Sylla; she is also described as Sylla’s step-daughter and ward.
