the eldest brother (Tale 25)

Family: Arikara · Role: eldest brother, married man and father · First appears: Tale 25 · The End of the Elk Power · Part 1

In Tale 25, the eldest brother is one of four strong young brothers, alongside Pretty-Voice, the third brother (Tale 25) and the fourth brother (Tale 25). He alone is married, with a wife and a baby. When his wife disappears one day, the baby is left behind crying; he tries to comfort the child with deer brain broth, which quiets him only briefly.

Before sunrise, the Elk tells Pretty-Voice that the eldest brother’s wife is alive and captured by a Bear, who has already captured three other women: “I will help you.”
