Caesar's Commentaries

Vibullius Rufus

Family: Pompeian · Role: envoy · First appears: The Civil War, Book I, 14–20

In Book I of The Civil War, Pompey sent Vibullius Rufus to Picenum to confirm the people in their allegiance. There, after learning from Lentulus Spinther about events in the region, Vibullius took his soldiers and dismissed him. Captured at Corfinium and set free by Caesar, Vibullius was then sent by Pompey into Spain. On his arrival, Lucius Afranius, Petreius and Marcus Varro divided their Spanish commands among themselves.

In Book III, at Candavia, Vibullius hurried to Pompey to warn him that Caesar was marching toward him with all his forces. Caesar sent Vibullius with proposals to Pompey, judging him suitable because of favours Caesar had granted him.
