Xenophon's Hellenica

Archidamus

Family: Lacedaemonians · Role: son of Agesilaus · First appears: Book 5, section 4, part 3/5

Archidamus, son of Agesilaus, was attached to Cleonymus, who remained faithful to his promise to Archidamus and died fighting alongside Deinon at Leuctra. Archidamus longed to see his friend but did not know how to visit him before speaking with his father. When Agesilaus was still disabled, Sparta assigned Archidamus command; he led the united armies to Corinth, dismissed the allies, and brought his fellow-citizens home.

Later, Archidamus sent assistance to Cissidas. At Sparta, he was wounded in the thigh while Polyaenidas and Chilon, his sister’s husband, died fighting in front of him. Facing Epaminondas, Archidamus led a counterattack with a hundred men, driving the opposing troops into flight; he marked the limit of his success with a trophy and returned the enemy dead under truce. On his right wing stood a sanctuary and statue of Heracles, described as his great ancestor.
