Earl of Pembroke
Family: England · Role: earl · First appears: Book 1, Chapter 23
In Book 1, Chapter 23, the Earl of Pembroke was among the earls who fought alongside King Edward, who was described as a gallant knight. By Chapter 33, he had been appointed to serve under Earl of Derby on an expedition. At Bergerac in Chapter 34, he and Earl of Oxford carried the inhabitants’ request for mercy to Derby; after Derby agreed, they relayed his answer, and the townspeople surrendered and swore fealty to Derby for the King of England.
In 1344, after the battle at Auberoche, Pembroke arrived with three hundred lances and four thousand archers. He and Earl of Derby were cousins; the next day, Derby and his company departed for Bordeaux with most of their prisoners. Later, at Aiguillon, Pembroke rode with the English who rescued Sir Walter Manny and helped defeat Lord Charles of Montmorency’s foraging party.
