Sigrun

Also known as: Kara · Family: House of Hogni · Role: daughter of Hogni; Valkyria · First appears: Elder Edda · The First Lay of Helgi Hundingcide · Part 2

In the First Lay of Helgi Hundingcide, Hogni (father of Sigrun) is named as Sigrun’s father. At Gnipalund, she rescued the royal ship and fleet from Ran, and at Frekastein she came from heaven to protect Helgi in battle.

In the Second Lay of Helgi Hundingcide, Sigrun is said to have been Svava regenerated. At the assembly of kings, Hodbrodd, son of Granmar, betrothed himself to her; Sigrun told Helgi that she loved another prince and had broken her father’s promise. Helgi said she would live with him, and they later had sons. When Dag told her that Helgi had fallen, she entered his mound at nightfall to reunite with him; the following evening, Helgi rode away while Sigrun returned to her home. Her life was shortened by grief and mourning. Helgi and Sigrun were said to have been regenerated as Helgi Haddingiaskadi and Kara, daughter of Halfdan (father of Kara).
