The Mabinogion

Gwyn ap Nudd

Also known as: Gwyn · Role: chieftain · First appears: KILHWCH AND OLWEN OR THE TWRCH TRWYTH 8

As chieftain, Gwyn ap Nudd first carried Creiddylad away by force before she could become Gwythyr the son of Greidawl’s bride. He and Gwythyr the son of Greidawl became rivals, and when Gwythyr gathered his host to fight him, Gwyn overcame him and captured Greid the son of Eri, Glinneu the son of Taran, Gwrgwst Ledlwm, Dynvarth, Penn the son of Nethawg, Nwython, and Kyledyr Wyllt.

Gwyn also killed Nwython and forced Kyledyr Wyllt to eat his father’s heart, after which Kyledyr became mad. When Arthur heard of these events, he summoned Gwyn, freed the imprisoned nobles, and made peace between Gwyn and Gwythyr the son of Greidawl: Creiddylad would remain in her father’s house, while the two rivals would fight for her every first of May until the day of doom, with the victor claiming her.
