The Metamorphoses of Ovid

Procris

Role: wife of Cephalus · First appears: Fable 61

Procris was the sister of Orithyïa and the daughter of Erectheus, who united her in marriage to Cephalus: “Her father Erectheus united her to me; love, {too}, united her to me.” After their marriage, Aurora carried Cephalus away against his will. At Athens, he later tested Procris in disguise, accused her, and drove her to flee; after confessing his fault, he was reconciled with her and restored her to him.

Procris gave Cephalus the exceptional dog and javelin that Diana had given her. Another account says she fled to Minos, who gave her the dog and javelin after prevailing over her virtue, while Pteleon was said to have been found with her after giving her a golden wreath. Later, when Cephalus hunted in the woods and called for the breeze, he mistook Procris for a wild beast and killed her with the javelin: “It was Procris;” He then realized that the name Aura had been a mistake, not the name of a lover.
