the old dervish

Also known as: the dervish · Family: Turks · Role: former captive · First appears: Chapter V · Banovitch Strahinya · Part 2

A few years before their reunion, Banovitch Strahinya held the old dervish captive in his castle and treated him humanely, giving him a daily measure of wine. Upon reaching home, the dervish found that Sultan Amourath had taken his estates and given his house and possessions as dowries. At Yedrenet, he offered the Sultan his services as a soldier; the Sultan gave him clothes and weapons, and the Vizir enrolled him among the warriors sworn to fight for him.

When the dervish met Strahinya again, Strahinya forgave his ransom and declared, “Thou art my brother-in-God!”
