Kouzma

Family: Levin household · Role: household servant · First appears: PART ONE · Chapter 26

As a household servant of the Levin household, Kouzma serves Levin, who calls on him for his sheepskin and a lantern in chapter 26. In chapter 48, he attends Stepan Arkadyevitch, dressing him in his stockings and boots, and in chapter 75 Sergey Ivanovitch asks him to bring down a letter and shut the doors.

By chapter 126, Kouzma is still preparing Levin for the day, laying out his clothes. At the hotel in chapter 127, he packs Levin’s wedding clothes without a clean shirt, delaying the departure, but “At last the guilty Kouzma flew panting into the room with the shirt.” After Levin’s marriage, chapter 191 places Kouzma as the old servant who looks after the household in town. In chapter 200, he tells Levin that Kitty is well, reports that her sisters have gone, and hands him two letters.
