Léyaneyani

Role: youngest brother · First appears: Origin Legend II: Early Events in the Fifth World · Part 9

In Origin Legend II: Early Events in the Fifth World · Part 9, one of the elder brothers sent Léyaneyani to watch Coyote and his wife, Tsiké Sas Nátlehi. The next morning, Léyaneyani helped persuade his brothers to take Coyote hunting; Coyote then opened a bundle despite their instructions, and the meat swelled beyond his ability to carry.

In Part 10, Léyaneyani’s brothers sent him again to watch their sister. In Part 11, they left him behind as they departed in four parties. Níyol and Pésasike made him a hidden underground refuge, gave him weapons, and placed Ni'ltsi and Tsalyél as warning monitors. When Tsiké Sas Nátlehi found him beneath the stones and coaxed him to take her hand, Ni'ltsi warned him not to.

In Part 12, the bear-woman tried to kill Léyaneyani while arranging his hair. He killed her with an arrow, stopped her blood from flowing together and reviving her, and transformed her into a bear that went to dwell at Black Mountain. He made her nipples into edible pine nuts, and Níyol and Pésasike restored his brothers to life. With the holy ones, he built a new house where his brothers had lived. They named him “Léyaneyani, or Reared Under the Ground,” and bade him dwell at Atáhyitsoi.
