John Hastings, Lord Abergavenny

Also known as: Iohn Hastings first lord of Aburgauennie / Iohn Hastings lord of Aburgauennie / John Hastings, Lord of Abergavenny / sir Iohn Hastings · Family: Hastings · Role: lord · First appears: Richard II 48

In 1302, John Hastings married Isabel de Valence, daughter and heir of William Valence, and Isabel Despenser, daughter of Hugh Despenser. He also brought forward Henry III’s grant of lands given in recompense for his part of the earldom of Chester, and sought to remain with Edward I in Gascoigne as his steward or marshal.

By Isabel de Valence, he had John Hastings, Lord Hastings, William Hastings, Henry Hastings, Elizabeth Hastings, Joan Hastings, and Margaret Hastings. William Hastings married Eleanor Martin and died without heirs; Henry Hastings was a clerk; Elizabeth Hastings married Roger Grey; Joan Hastings married Edmund Mortimer and later William de Huntingfield; and Margaret Hastings married William Martin. By Isabel Despenser, he had Hugh Hastings, Lord Folliot, Thomas Hastings, and Pelagia de Huntington.

The later account describes John Hastings, Lord Hastings as the son of Henry Hastings and records his marriage to Margaret Folliot, arranged by his mother, Isabella Spencer, who purchased his ward. “This Iohn Hastings departed this life 1313, the sixt yeare of the reigne of Edward the second.”
