Herodotus' Histories

Gyges

Family: Lydian · Role: son of Daskylos and spearman of Candaules · First appears: Book 1 · §1–8

As a spearman of Candaules, Gyges was the one “of all his spearmen” most pleasing to him, and Candaules shared his weightier affairs with him and praised his wife’s beauty. When night came, Gyges slew Candaules and obtained his wife and kingdom. At Delphi, the Oracle confirmed him as king of the Lydians; the Pythian prophetess also foretold vengeance upon his descendants in the fifth generation. On becoming king, he sent numerous offerings to Delphi, led an army against Miletos and Smyrna, and took Colophon’s lower town.

Gyges was succeeded by his son Ardys. Archilochos of Paros made mention of him in verse. Later, Oroites sent Myrsos, Gyges’s son, to Samos with a message; Myrsos died when the Carians ambushed the Persians by night.
