Isabella of Valois

Also known as: Isabell / Isabell the daughter of the king of France / queene Isabell / yoong quéene · Family: Valois · Role: queen · First appears: Richard II 50

In 1396, Isabella of Valois married Richard II by proxy, becoming queen of England, and later that year he married her solemnly at the church of Saint Nicholas. At the marriage, Hugh Hastings died at Calais. In 1397 she was brought to Westminster and crowned queen, “finallie there crowned queene” on 7 January.

Around 1400, her father, Charles VI, requested her return from Henry IV, who promised commissioners at Calais to settle the matter. In 1401 she was sent home with her jewels, ornaments, plate, and additional gifts from the king, and was delivered between Boulogne and Calais to Waleran, Count of Saint-Pol. Although her marriage to Henry V had been requested, she was instead taken to her parents in Paris by Louis, Duke of Orléans, and was afterward married to Charles, Duke of Orléans.
