Mazarin
Also known as: M. Mazarin / M. de Mazarin / Monseigneur Mazarin · Family: French court · Role: prime minister · First appears: Chapter 1
At the French court, Mazarin served as prime minister. In 1610, Philippe took the protection that Anne of Austria and Mazarin had given him as evidence that he was high-born, while Mazarin was described as deeply distrusted by Anne of Austria. A story also circulated that Percerin received letters of nobility from Mazarin in exchange for supplying him with ceremonial vestments as a cardinal.
By chapter 9, Mazarin and Anne of Austria were named as the subjects of a conspiracy against Philippe, while Aramis proposed replacing Louis XIV with Philippe. Mazarin was later identified as an employer of D’Artagnan, though he had refused him money, and Fouquet was said to possess receipts for thirteen millions that Mazarin had contrived to steal. By chapter 36, Aramis was remembered as someone who had given Mazarin great trouble during the regency and was counted among his enemies.
