Fonteius Capito
Family: Roman · Role: proconsul · First appears: Annals IV (5)
Fonteius Capito was a Roman proconsul who governed Asia. In Annals IV (5), he opposed Vibius Serenus and was acquitted when the charges brought against him were shown to have “were forged.”
In Histories I, while in Germany, Cornelius Aquinus and Fabius Valens killed him without awaiting instructions. They were his officers and were believed to have urged him to declare war, then falsely accused him when he refused; Galba approved what had happened. The army later opposed Julius Burdo for allegedly intriguing against Fonteius Capito and falsely accusing him, while Crispinus was said to have stained his hands with Capito’s blood. Fonteius Capito had also executed Julius Paulus “on a false charge of rebellion.”
