Nicolaus
Family: Herodian · Role: litigant against Antipater · First appears: Book I, Chapter 29
In Book I, Chapter 29, Nicolaus was a rival of Sylleus in the lawsuit against Antipater (son of Herod and Doris). By Chapter 32, Herod (son of Antipater and Cypros) ordered him to present the evidence against Antipater, and Nicolaus formally accused him of attempting to poison Herod and of orchestrating crimes throughout the kingdom, especially the murder of his brothers. He “proceeded to convict him of the attempt to poison Herod” and gave an ordered account of the discoveries against him.
In Book II, Chapter 2, Nicolaus went to the seaside with Archelaus (son of Herod and Malthace), Poplas, and Ptolemy, who was his brother. He then stood up to defend Archelaus before Caesar, arguing that the slaughter in the temple could not have been avoided and that the latter testament should determine the succession: “Then stood up Nicolaus to plead for Archelaus.”
