Pawnee Hero Stories and Folk-Tales

the mother (Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa)

Family: Pawnee · Role: mother · First appears: Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa · Part 1

At the village, Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa’s mother and father mourned his death, saying, “Now we have no one to help us hoe. We are old, and he helped us; but now he is gone.” After two months, she had cried so much that she became blind. One night at midnight, Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa returned to the lodge and told her, “Mother, I am here,” then gave her fresh buffalo meat.

After a long time, Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa returned and told her there was water in a wooden bowl beside the daughter (Pa-Hu-Ka´-Tawa)’s bed. After he had gone, his mother washed her eyes in the water and regained her sight.
