The Wars of the Jews

Malichus (Jewish commander)

Also known as: Malichus / Malithus · Family: Jewish · Role: commander · First appears: Book I, Chapter 8

In Book I, Chapter 8, Malichus commanded a body of Jews with Pitholaus, and they joined the captains around Marcus Antonius during the fighting near Jerusalem, where Alexander (son of Aristobulus) was defeated. By Book I, Chapter 11, Malichus was at enmity with Antipater and sought to raise the nation in revolt from the Romans, depose Hyrcanus, and take the crown for himself; Cassius also hated him.

Antipater saved Malichus from Marcus, then president of Syria, when Marcus resolved to kill him for his attempts at innovation. Malichus later arranged Antipater’s poisoning by bribing one of the king’s cup-bearers, and Antipater died at a feast.
