Xenophon

Family: Athenian · Role: historian · First appears: Book 1 · Chapter 3

At Mantinea, Gryllus, Xenophon’s son, led the Athenian cavalry in a notable charge against the Bœotian cavalry led by Epaminondas. In Book 5, the Athenians banished Xenophon for joining Cyrus against the Persian king. The Lacedæmonians later gave the exiled Xenophon Scillus; tried for receiving it, he was acquitted and allowed to remain there.

In Book 6, a statue was identified as Xenophon, son of Menephylus, and stood by Olympus. In Book 8, Xenophon and Cephisodotus carved statues of Zeus and Artemis at Megalopolis; Gryllus was honored as the bravest participant in a battle. In Book 9, Xenophon made the hands and face of the statue of Fortune carrying Wealth, while Callistonicus made the other parts.
