The Legends of the Jews, Volume I

the serpent

Also known as: serpent · Role: serpent · First appears: The Fall Of Man

At the Fall of Man, the serpent pushed Eve against the tree and persuaded her that eating its fruit would not kill her, telling her, “Thou seest that touching the tree has not caused thy death. As little will it hurt thee to eat the fruit of the tree.” It was an enemy of Adam, and envy led it to seek ways to bring about his death.

At the Punishment, God decreed ten punishments for the serpent, including loss of speech and limbs, and enmity with humanity. Angels descended and chopped off its hands and feet. God declared, “Therefore I will put enmity between thee and the woman,” making the serpent an enemy of Eve.
