Julia

Family: Caesars · Role: wife of Marius · First appears: Caius Marius

Julia made an honorable match with Caius Marius, “of the distinguished family of the Caesars,” and was his wife. Their marriage produced younger Marius, while Julia was also described as Caesar’s aunt, the wife of Caius Marius.

Julia had previously been contracted to Servilius Caepio, but Pompey married her “on a sudden,” despite her being due to marry Caepio within days, cementing his political alliance with Caesar. She is also described as the mother of Antony, who received his education under her; after the death of Antony’s father, she remarried Cornelius Lentulus. In the same material, Julia is associated with marriages to Marcellus and Agrippa, and is described as Caesar’s daughter.
