How to open a .md file

A .md file is a Markdown document: plain text with a few symbols for formatting — # for headings, ** for bold, - for lists. Any text editor can open it, but you'll see those symbols. To read it the way it was meant to look, open it in a Markdown reader.

On Windows

1. Install Rho MD from the Microsoft Store.
2. Double-click the .md file. If Windows asks which app to use, pick Rho MD and choose Always. Or right-click the file → Open with → Rho MD.

Without installing anything: Notepad opens it as plain text.

On Mac

Rho MD for Mac is coming to the Mac App Store soon. Until then, TextEdit opens a .md file as plain text, and pressing Space on it in Finder shows a plain-text preview.

On Linux

1. Install Rho MD from the Snap Store (sudo snap install rho-md), or the AppImage or .deb from the download page.
2. Double-click the file, or right-click → Open With → Rho MD.

Any text editor — gedit, Kate, nano — opens it as plain text.

On Android

1. Install Rho MD from Google Play.
2. Open the .md file from your Files app, a download or an attachment, and choose Rho MD.

On iPhone and iPad

Rho MD for iPhone and iPad is coming soon. Until then, the Files app shows a .md file as plain text.

That's all Markdown is: text you can read even without a reader, that turns into a clean document with one. Rho MD also renders tables, math, diagrams and code — and documents can include live charts you can drag.
