King Sarjarasin

Also known as: Sarjarasin · Family: Vārāṇasī · Role: king · First appears: Chapter XVII

In long past times at Vārāṇasī, King Sarjarasin married Dharmikā, the daughter of another king. After eight or nine months, she gave birth to their son, Sūryanemi. Sarjarasin’s prime minister was Goshṭhila, in whom he placed great confidence.

When Sarjarasin fell ill and could not be cured, he feared that Sūryanemi might have Dharmikā put to death after succeeding him. He told Goshṭhila, “you must out of love for me take care that Sūryanemi does not put Dharmikā to death.” After some time, Sarjarasin died; his body was burned with pomp, and Sūryanemi was consecrated king.
