The Story of the Volsungs

Guttorm

Family: Giukings · Role: son of Giuki · First appears: Chapter XXV · Of the Dream of Gudrun, Giuki's daughter

In Chapter XXV, Guttorm is named as one of Giuki’s three sons, alongside Gunnar and Hogni, and as a brother of Gudrun. Brynhild foretells that Gudrun will wed Sigurd and later Atli, and that her brothers will die.

In Chapter XXX, Gunnar and Hogni offer Guttorm gold and dominion to kill Sigurd. After eating bewitched meat, he agrees. The next morning, he stabs Sigurd as he sleeps; Sigurd hurls Gram after him and kills him. In the Short Lay of Sigurd and the Second or Ancient Lay of Gudrun, the poems tell of Sigurd’s slaying and name Guttorm as his bane.
