Ten Years Later

Chevalier de Lorraine

Also known as: Chevalier / De Lorraine / M. de Lorraine / the Chevalier de Lorraine / the chevalier / the favorite · Family: French court · Role: chevalier · First appears: Chapter 7

At chapter 7, the Chevalier de Lorraine was connected with De Guiche as both friend and rival: De Guiche was urged to make friends with him, while the Chevalier regarded every favor granted to another as a loss to himself. He shared Monsieur’s favor and good graces with De Guiche, and at chapter 13 was described as the inseparable companion of Duc d’Orleans. By chapter 16, he had acquired ascendency over Monsieur and was named among his double-dealing advisers.

At chapter 30, fearing that De Guiche would supplant him, the Chevalier disappeared from court, leaving Monsieur embarrassed, then returned to his apartments. He was permitted to monopolize Monsieur, informed Duc d’Orleans of rumors concerning De Guiche’s attentions to Madame, bought Malicorne’s secret for a hundred pistoles, and falsely declared of De Guiche, “He cannot be found. He has fled--has evaporated entirely.” He accompanied Duc d’Orleans to Madame’s apartments, and at chapter 31 was addressed as a friend by Duc d’Orleans, though Malicorne said that his interest was in belonging to Monsieur’s household.

By chapter 34, the Chevalier had a secret dislike for Raoul, as for every other noble character, and at chapter 44 he felt repugnance at the sight of De Guiche and De Bragelonne. He waited for De Wardes to accomplish more than he could in a month, read De Wardes’s letter about the sword-thrust at Calais, bowed to Fouquet, and later remained at the château with Monsieur and Manicamp.
