Greek Mythology

Ino

Also known as: Leucothea · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.9

🌐 Also appears in: The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Ino) · Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Ino)

In Boeotia, Ino married Athamas and became the parent of Learchus and Melicertes. She plotted against Phrixus and Helle, the children of Nephele. Later, Athamas killed Learchus while mad, and Ino cast herself and Melicertes into the sea: “But afterwards Athamas was bereft also of the children of Ino through the wrath of Hera.”

Ino was also born to Cadmus and Harmonia, alongside Autonoe, Semele, Agave, and Polydorus. With Athamas, she was entrusted with raising Dionysus as a girl, but Hera drove them mad; Ino threw Melicertes into a boiling cauldron and then carried the dead child into the deep.
