Eurytus
Family: Giants · Role: giant · First appears: Apollodorus, Library 1.6
🌐 Also appears in: The Metamorphoses of Ovid (as Eurytus) · Greek Tragedy — The Same Myth, Three Voices (as Eurytus)
Eurytus taught Heracles to shoot with the bow. He was the father of Iole and Iphitus, his elder son; Neleus was counted as his friend, refusing a request because of that friendship. He was also described as a son of Actor and Molione, though Poseidon was said to be his father, and elsewhere as one of Hippocoon’s sons.
At Oechalia, Iphitus supported giving Iole to Heracles as a marriage prize, but Eurytus and the others refused. Heracles later mustered an army to attack Oechalia in punishment, slew Eurytus and his sons, took the city, and led Iole captive; after the killing, Heracles was required to serve for three years and pay compensation to Eurytus. In another account, Eurytus was killed by Dionysus with a thyrsus.
