Pausanias' Description of Greece

Appius

Family: Roman · Role: plenipotentiary · First appears: Book 7 · Chapter 9

In Book 7, Chapter 9, Appius’s embassy included Areus and Alcibiades, whose presence was unlikely to please the Achæans. When Lycortas defended them, Appius and his suite jeered at his speech; Appius’s council then declared Areus and Alcibiades innocent and permitted Spartan envoys to visit Rome.

At Sparta, Roman commissioners restored exiles and remitted fines imposed on those condemned in their absence. Appius favoured the Lacedæmonians and opposed the Achæans, securing Roman support for restoring Messenian and Achæan exiles to their rights.
