Pausanias' Description of Greece

Damis

Family: Messenian · Role: authority · First appears: Book 4 · Chapter 10

In Book 4, Chapter 10, Damis was a rival of Aristodemus, considered superior to him in several respects and in war, though Aristodemus was elected king over Damis and Cleonnis. Aristodemus held Damis in special honour. In the fifth year of the king’s reign, Damis remained with Aristodemus and the light-armed troops concealed in ambush at Ithome.

In Chapter 13, the Messenians appointed Damis dictator rather than choosing another king. He selected Cleonnis and Phyleus as coadjutors for the campaign and prepared as best he could under the circumstances. Towards the close of the year, the Messenians evacuated Ithome, ending their twenty-year war.
