Ulfius
Also known as: Sir Ulfius · Family: Uther's court · Role: trusted intermediary · First appears: Book I, Chapter II
In Book I, Chapter II, Uther Pendragon placed his trust in Ulfius to negotiate between him and others, setting him alongside Brastias as a knight of the duke’s. At St. Albans in Chapter IV, Ulfius and Brastias performed great deeds of arms as Uther Pendragon’s forces defeated the Northern host. After King Arthur’s succession, Ulfius was among the trusted knights kept around Arthur day and night, and in Chapter VII Arthur appointed him chamberlain.
In Chapter X, King Arthur sent Ulfius and Brastias with letters to King Ban and King Bors seeking aid in his wars; the two kings welcomed them and offered them hospitality. During the fighting in Chapter XIV, Duke Eustace of Cambenet and King Clariance were grievous toward Ulfius, while Arthur gave him the horse taken from King Cradelment, calling him “mine old friend.” Ulfius also came to great peril with Brastias before Sir Ector joined them, and in Chapter XV the three knights forced Duke Eustace, King Cradelment, King Clariance, King Carados, and King with the Hundred Knights to abandon the ground.
At Bedegraine in Chapter XVII, Ulfius and Brastias recognized Merlin through his disguise for King Arthur. At Carlion in Chapter XX, Ulfius and Sir Ector confirmed that Uther Pendragon was Arthur’s father and Igraine his mother. When Igraine was confronted in Chapter XXI, Ulfius condemned her as “the falsest lady of the world, and the most traitress unto the king’s person.”
