William Neville, Lord Fauconberg

Also known as: William Neville, Baron Fauconberg / William Neville, Earl of Kent / William lord Fauconbridge / lord Fauconbridge / sir William Neuill lord Fauconbridge · Family: England · Role: military commander · First appears: Henry VI 27

In 1460, William Neville joined Edward IV, Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, and Henry Bourchier, Earl of Essex as Yorkist forces departed London for Henry VI at Coventry, leading a force drawn from Kent, Essex, Surrey, and Sussex. He was allied by fealty with Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, who sent him with other captains and five thousand men to rescue their fellows, and he was Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick’s uncle and the brother of Richard Neville, Earl of Salisbury.

In Edward IV 1, William led Edward IV’s vanguard against Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland, Andrew Trollope, and John Clifford, Lord Clifford. With Walter Blunt and Robert Horne, he crossed the river near Castleford to surround John Clifford, Lord Clifford; later, his archers shot their volleys and turned captured arrows against the northern army before the battle joined. As Edward IV’s loyal commander, he “caused euerie archer vnder his standard to shoot one flight.” Later, as Earl of Kent, he kept the seas with John Howard, Duke of Norfolk and Richard Walgrave, accompanying the force that landed in Brittany and took Conquet.
