Elgar
Also known as: Alderman Elgar / Algar / Earl Elgar · Role: alderman · First appears: A.D. 938–958
In 946, Ethelfleda of Damerham was identified as the daughter of Alderman Elgar. In 1048 and 1051, Algar, son of Earl Leofric, was appointed or promoted to the earldom previously held by Harold son of Godwin. In 1055, Earl Elgar was outlawed at a council in London, but the sentence was reversed and his possessions restored.
That year, Griffin received Elgar and his armament on terms of amity; the two burned St. Ethelbert’s minster and the town of Hereford. Earl Ralph gathered an army against them at Hereford. Elgar and Harold son of Godwin later established “amity and friendship” at Bilsley. In 1057, Elgar succeeded his father to his territory. After being banished in 1058, he returned by force with Griffin’s assistance. In 1065, his son Morkar was chosen earl in Tosty’s place.
